Hi Shawnie, I’m pleased to be able to report that thanks to your clear pictures, we can confidently identify that crab as a native red rock crab and a native dungeness crab. You’ve done everything perfectly and we’re always happy to take a look at unusual crabs this way, so please continue to keep an eye out and keep the photos coming, particularly if you spot any in inland geographies where European green crabs are still rare and early detection remains the goal. As you might be aware, green crabs are unfortunately widespread throughout the Westport area and the rest of our coastal estuaries, and a number of tribes, agencies and community members work collectively to trap them there. Molt Searches from coastal geographies allow us to learn more about how known populations of crabs relate to the signs of them we find as molts, but that differs a bit from the early detection purpose it serves in the Salish Sea (i.e. a way of finding green crab in areas where they haven’t before been found, while their numbers are still low). Thanks so much for contributing data to this effort!
