Thanks so much for taking the time to do a Molt Search this week, Roseamber! With the recent sightings of green crab at False Bay on San Juan (wsg.washington.edu/false-bay-sji-greencrab/), monitoring the shorelines of Lopez is a really valuable contribution to these statewide efforts! Your super clear, organized photo helps tremendously for the data checks we do on each report (and in the future, adding an upsidedown credit card or key to the mix will allow us to use your data even further). I did make one correction to your count, which is to adjust the identification of that largest crab carapace. That individual is a red rock crab, ID’ed from it’s “empanada-like” marginal teeth and the protruding rostral bumps between its eyes (almost like a baseball cap brim). You can see it in relation to the similarly shaped Dungeness crabs (widest at their tenth marginal tooth) in these flashcards– https://wsg.washington.edu/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/MEGRvCAPRvMEMA-Slides.pdf — but know we’re always happy to help with ID and offer corrections from here, so keep em coming! Grateful to have you part of these important efforts with us! – Lisa
